Being a disabled person through the coronavirus pandemic

When the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020 I didn’t realised how it would affect those living with disabilities.

Fast forward to 2021 and now I realise what it is like being a disabled person and living through a global pandemic.

I have spent the majority of the last year indoors shielding myself away from the coronavirus.

The reason why I chose to shield from the virus was because if I catch it will kill me.

It is not an exaggeration that the virus will kill me as I have disabilities that will affect my breathing.

I was born at 25 weeks weighing half a bag of sugar and this led to me spending the first three months of my life in hospital.

In the coming months I will do everything in my power to ensure that I remain safe and protected from the virus as we continue to move out of these uncertain times.

I have really missed seeing all of my friends and spending time outside having fun but I know that the sacrifices will be worth it in the long run.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind all disabled young people who have shielded during the past year that this has been worth it as you will have protected yourself and those who you love.

At times during the last year I have become very isolated and this has affected my mental health.

Now that I’ve been vaccinated against to the coronavirus I am going to begin to live life to the full once again but continuing to follow the current guidance.

I would once again like to take this opportunity to remind all disabled young people that they should continue to follow the guidance whilst enjoying what they’ve missed during the past year.

It has not been easy for me or any other disabled young person in the last year but we know that we have helped to keep our families safe.

Thank you to all those who have supported me to remain mentally sane as without you I would have suffered very badly with my mental health.
