I have taken the very difficult decision not to watch any of the 2022 FIFA World Cup that started in Qatar yesterday.
I am deeply concerned as a disability rights campaigner about Qatar’s human rights record so I will be taking a stand against the tournament on behalf of the disabled community in the united kingdom.
As a disabled person I see football as a life line to me enjoying something that my able-bodied peers can also enjoy on a regular basis.
If the tournament was being hosted in any other country then of course I would be watching it and getting Wales and the three lions.
When I became a disability rights campaigner back in 2016 I said that my mission was to spread a message of acceptance and equality for all.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is not sharing a message that I both believe in or can accept as this goes against everything that I believe in.
I am incredibly emotional writing this blog because it hurts that the eyes of the footballing world will be on a country that doesn’t accept or understand that everyone should be treated as an equal.
I hope that in years to come the governing body of football (FIFA) will learn from this huge mistake and will never choose to host a FIFA World Cup in a country that doesn’t recognise equality for all again.
I know that is another short blog but I wanted to outline my reasons for not watching the 2022 FIFA World Cup over the next few weeks.
I am incredibly excited for the FIFA Women’s World Cup next year which is being hosted by Australia and New Zealand, I will of course be getting behind Sarina Wiegman and the lionesses on there World Cup journey down under.
As I also do I would to end this incredibly emotional blog by thanking both my readers and followers for taking the time out of your busy schedules to read my latest blog.
