Saturday the 25th of February saw sports fans from across the nation unite for access in aid of a campaign fronted by Level Playing Field.
The purpose of the Unite For Access campaign is to ensure that all disabled sports fans have the same rights as their able-bodied peers when it comes to enjoying sporting events.
As a massive Aston Villa fan who uses a wheelchair I am planning to celebrate the Unite for Access campaign today (Saturday the 4th of March) when I visit Villa Park to watch the mighty villa take on Crystal Palace.
I strongly believe as a disability rights campaigner that all disabled people have the right to attend sporting events regardless of there individual needs.
I travel to Aston Villa’s matches on the train and this can be an absolute nightmare at times because of some accessibility issues.
I am consistently finding that I am having to leave the stadium at the 80 minute regardless of the scoreline to beat other fans back to Witton train station and get a place on the platform.
There needs to be better access to public transport for those with disabilities on the days of major sporting events like football matches.
I am today calling on the FA (Football Association) & government to do more when it comes to all sports fans having equal access to sporting venues.
I believe that good things are currently being done in this area but there is still room for some improvement so that there no access issues (or limited ones) when it comes to disabled fans enjoying there day out.
I wrote to the minister for sport and equalities at the department for culture, media and sport, Stuart Andrew on Sunday the 12th of February calling on him to hold the governing body for football (The FA) to account when it comes to ensuring that all is being done to ensure that football stadiums are accessible as possible for disabled supporters.
I am very passionate about access for all when it comes large venues of any kind as I believe everyone has the right to access them in a safe and comfortable way.
I know that this is another very short blog but I wanted to capitalise on the opportunity to celebrate the 2023 Unite for Access campaign led by Level Playing Field and what it means to me as a disabled sports fanatic.
I will end in my normal way by taking the opportunity to thank both my readers and followers for taking the time out of your busy schedules to read my latest blog.
