Looking back on my time as chair of the Football versus Homophobia youth panel.

Over the last couple of years I’ve been reflecting on time as chair of the Football vs Homophobia youth panel which I was appointed to on Monday the 6th of July 2020.

I absolutely loved planning and delivering our monthly meetings on zoom because it tested my leadership skills to the max.

I led the youth panel though its very first virtual month of action in February 2021 and this was something that I loved.

I was given the opportunity to interview England Cerebral Palsy international Harry Baker live on Facebook.

I asked him a number of questions during the interview and these questions included things about his international playing career.

Harry told those listening in the virtual room and live on Facebook that they shouldn’t be afraid to ask someone in public what disability they have.

He also went on to remind the audience in the room and those watching on Facebook that they should treat people how they would want to be treated themselves.

These were 2 key pieces of advice for everyone involved in the event and the general public who may watch the recording of the interview at a later date.

I also loved being involved in a podcast for the 2021 Hate Crime Awareness week where I shared a story of when I had been a victim of hate crime.

It was incredibly hard to share my story with the other members of our incredible youth panel.

As I write this piece I’m getting quite emotional because I know what difference I made to the lives of young people during my time on the FVH youth panel.

Here is some advice for any prospective members of the youth panel, Grab every opportunity that Football vs Homophobia afford you with both hands because if you don’t you will most certainly regret it.

If you would also like to listen to the segment of the podcast where I talk openly about being a victim of hate crime you can catch it here: https://twitter.com/fvhyouth/status/1447992644316106757?s=48&t=aL4rJ2u1guGQ95AP3iUItg
