The highway’s team at Herefordshire Council announced this afternoon that they will be gritting all Cycleways in Hereford City Centre, priority Footways in Hereford and the market towns from 6pm this evening.
They will then start to grit all car parks from 3am tomorrow morning (Thursday the 18th of January, 2024).
I don’t believe that this goes far enough to ensuring the safety of those who use wheelchairs, mobility scooters and walking aids to get around safely whilst out and about in Hereford.
I had a near miss whilst out and about in Hereford in my wheelchair last January due to an untreated pavement and I fear that it could happen again this winter.
I called for Herefordshire Council to consider adding the gritting of our pavement network into there Winter Operations Plan despite knowing that its not possible for them to grit every piece of the pavement network.
I have this afternoon written to Cllr Phillip Price, the Cabinet Member for Transport and Infrastructure at Herefordshire Council urging him to reconsider the council’s position on the matter.
I hope that Cllr Price doesn’t just dismiss my concerns once he has finished reading my letter because I thought we had a better working relationship than that. .
I have also asked if it would be possible for Herefordshire Council to consider reinstalling the grit/salt bin that used to be found at the bottom of our drive.
I will continue to raise this issue of gritting the pavements in Herefordshire with council until it has been resolved in a satisfactory manner.
I recently wrote a similar blog on this issue which can be found here: https://just-being-cp.co.uk/2024/01/08/i-live-on-a-private-drive-that-doesnt-get-gritted-so-fear-being-trapped-in-doors-over-the-next-day-or-so/
