I believe that the roads in the West Midlands are an accident waiting to happen for those with mobility issue because we are forced to use the road as our pavement due to the sheer amount of vehicles parked on the pavement.
I told ITV News Central in January 2022 that Herefordshire’s road are an accident waiting to happen for those with disabilities because of a lack dropped curbs in the county, I now believe that this is the case because of pavement parking.
It’s now emerged that a government consultation on the issue was completed 4 years ago in 2020, however has of today (29th of January, 2024) no law has been enforced.
I have just written to Guy Opperman the MP for Hexham who is also the Minister in charge of Roads and Local Transport at the Department for Transport.
I asked the Minister and his departmental official’s at the DFT (Department For Transport) for an update on next following the consultation.
I went onto highlight that it is wholly unacceptable that it has taken 4 years for officials at the Department for Transport to analyse the responses received from the consultation.
It time that the government in Westminister, follow Edinburgh’s lead and introduce £100 fines for any motorist who is caught parking on the pavement. This would help to ensure that the disabled community are safe when moving around independently, going about their daily business.
I repeat my message to motorists from last Wednesday the 24th of January 2024, It is not okay to park on the pavement as your putting those disabilities at risk because we are having to venture into the road to get around your vehicle. Just take an extra minute or so to find a safe place to park before leaving your vehicle.
