I have spent much of the last 471 days wondering how much more I have to do to make my voice and that of others heard at the very highest level, if the team at West Midlands Trains can listen why can’t His Majesty’s government follow suit.
Once I completed my goal of ensuring that the stations around Villa Park are fully accessible to all, I turned my attention to the second phase of my campaign, getting the accessibility signage installed at all unstaffed stations across England.
Jesse Norman, the member of parliament for Hereford and South Herefordshire between 2010 and 2024 wrote a covering note to accompany my letter to the Department for Transport in which he asked the departments official’s to meet with me so that my calls could be discussed in more detail.
A General Election was called by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the 23rd of May and is due to take place on Thursday July the 4th, this meant that I will not receive a response from the DFT until after the election.
I am asking for there to guidance produced around rail operators installing accessibility signage at there unstaffed stations which have the highest number of mobility assist’s, this will in my opinion benefit thousands of people with mobility issues who use the rail network each year to get around.
`We will never get a straight answer in respect of this guidance becoming a reality from whichever political party is in residence at 10 Downing Street because members of parliament struggle to answer simple questions when asked.
It’s time that they changed this approach and started to answer simple questions from their fellow MP’s and general members of the public who they are there to represent at home.
I am passionate about the accessibility of public transport for those with mobility issues who struggle to get around independently and that is why I’m hoping that the next Prime Minister and his government will make drastic improvements to this area of society within the first 6 months of there term in terms office.
My message to Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives is simple and is this, When you appoint your new Minister for Rail and HS2 please can you ask them to look at how accessible our rail network is for those with mobility issues and other disabilities.
I also a simple message for the leader of the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer, If you are elected as our next Prime Minister please can you ask your Minister for Rail and HS2 to look at how accessible our rail network is for those with mobility issues and other disabilities.
I would also urge the Liberal Democratic leader , Sir Ed Davey to do the same and my message to him would be this, if for whatever reason a shock result happens and you are elected as our countries next Prime Minister then please can you ask your Minister for Rail and HS2 to look at how accessible the rail network is for those with mobility issues and other disabilities.
I realise that this issue won’t be addressed during the next few weeks of General Election campaigning and that is why I plan to write to the next Prime Minister once the election result has been announced on Friday the 5th of July, 2024
I urge all those with disabilities to watch this evening’s Sunak vs Starmer Election Debate on ITV1 from 9pm to see if they mention how they plan to support us, the disabled community over the next 5 or so years.
