Curbs on one of Hereford’s busiest roads not dropped despite promises that they would be.

I am angry that curbs on a road that is consistently littered with parked vehicles in Hereford have not been dropped by Herefordshire Council despite promises that they would be.

I received an email from the Head of Design and Project Management at Herefordshire Council’s contractor who deal with the road & pavement network across the county on Monday evening.

The email confirmed that work would begin the following morning on installing 6 dropped curbs across Westfailing Street and Barrie Road.

Westfailing Street in Hereford is one of the locations for the new dropped curbs in Hereford.
Barrie Road is located just off Westfailing Street in Hereford and is the second location for the new dropped curbs.
The first curb to be dropped as part of this programme of works will be on Westfailing Street
The second curb to be dropped as part of this programme of works will also be on Westfailing Street.
The third curb that will be dropped as part of these planned works will also be on Westfailing Street.
The fourth curb to be dropped as part of these works will also be on Westfailing Street

The programme of works will then be centred on Barrie Road once all of the curbs on Westfailing Street have been dropped.

The fifth curb that will be dropped is at the top end of Barrie Road
The sixth and final curb that will be dropped as part of planned maintenance is also located on Barrie Road in Hereford.

There has been no sign of the work being started so far this week by the contractor on behalf of the local authority, which is disappointing to see.

This disappointment comes just weeks after the Chief Executive Officer of the council personally contacted me offered an apology for the way that my concerns about the state of the pavements in the county had been handled by officers in recent years.

He was so disappointed with the way that I had been failed by his officers, so he decided to monitor what happened next himself once I had given him all of the facts.

My message to the council and there roads/pavements contractor is very simple, if the work has been delayed due to the weather in Herefordshire then please get in touch to inform me of this, it’s okay I completely understand.

As you will be aware this isn’t the first time that I have had to fight the council in relation to the installation of dropped curbs in the county.

August 2022 saw the installation of 16 pairs of dropped curbs on Harrow Road and Plough Lane in Hereford, this only happened following my 4 year battle with the council about the issue which sparked interest from ITV News Central and Hits Radio, West Midlands (formerly Free Radio News).

There are also a number of curbs that were dropped along Plough Lane as part of the programme of works in 2022.

This was the first curb to be dropped on Plough Lane during the programme of works in 2022
This was the second curb to be dropped on Plough Lane in 2022 as part of the planned works.
This was the third curb to be dropped in 2022 as part on the planned works on Plough Lane in Hereford.
This was fourth and penultimate curb that was dropped on Plough Lane before work moved in Harrow Road.
This was the final curb to be dropped on Plough Lane in 2022 before work moved into Harrow Road.

I told ITV News Central after the installation of these curbs was complete that ” this was never about me as an individual, this was always about the disabled community here in Herefordshire. So I acted for them in saying to Herefordshire Council that this is an issue so you need to come and do something about it.

Speaking to ITV News Central on the site of the installation whilst work takes place in August/September 2022

Thankfully they did and spent around £55,000 on installing these dropped curbs, the big question is did they agree to add dropped curbs on Westfailing Street and Barrie Road earlier this year to just shut me up or are they going to install them.

Only time will tell!!!!!!
