As we enter the final few hours of campaigning ahead of tomorrow’s General Election I have been accessing what the main political parties have said on disability.
What do The Conservative and Unionist Party say about Disability
- Want to reform Disability Benefits and tighten up what they call a ” sick note culture” because they believe that people are 3 times more likely to be accessed as not being fit to be in employment.
- 60,000 new school places will be created and 15 specialist schools for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) will be built.
- Mental Health should be given a parity of esteem with physical health and as such, they plan to increase the number of clinical placements for those that are experiencing severe mental illness by 140,000.
- The tories also want to cut £12bn from the United Kingdom’s £69bn welfare bill, they also say that disability benefits alone are expected to rise from £39bn to £58bn in the year 2028/2029.
- 14bn of the disability benefit rise will be because an increase to PIP (Personal Independence Payment)
As a disability campaigner I welcome the news that 60,000 school places and 15 specialist schools will be created for children and young people who identify as having special educational needs and disabilities.
I also welcome the news that the Tories plan to created 140,000 more clinical placements for those who experience severe mental health struggles.
I am however disappointed to see that there is no mention of putting additional funding into improving our pavement and public transport network to help keep our community safe when we are trying to remain independent.
What do The Labour Party say about Disability
- Want to improve the access to mental health care by introducing specialist professionals in every school around the country and recruit an additional 8,500 NHS staff. They also want special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) expertise in mainstream educational settings.
- Labour also want to get disabled people into work by reforming the work capability assessment
I am incredibly disappointed that the Labour Party is only focusing on getting our community into work and improving mental health care across the country.
I would have liked them to set out how they plan to put additional funding into improving our public transport and pavement networks to keep our community safe as we try to remain independent.
I have concerns that we will be forgotten if they are elected as the governing party in Westminster.
What do The Liberal Democrats say about Disability
- Want to reform PIP (Personal Independence Payment) to avoid unnecessary reassessments and give disabled people the right to work from home.
- Wants to have mental health professionals in every school and bring an end to so called ” out of area mental health placements” so that people can be treated closer to where they live.
- They also want to introduce 1 hour targets for police to hand over someone that is experiencing a mental health crisis to the relevant service.
The pledges set out by the lib dems 100% excite me because I believe that people should get the best possible care if they are experiencing a mental crisis.
I would have liked to have a seen a mention on how they plan to improve our public transport and pavement networks for those with mobility issues and other disabilities.
What does The Scottish National Party say about Disability
- Scap the proposed punitive welfare reforms for sick and disabled people.
I am both shocked and disgusted that there is no mention of what the SNP plan to do for the disabled community who reside in Scotland if they are elected.
What does The Green Party say about Disability
- Want to put mental health on an equal footing with physical health by offering therapies within 28 days and providing trained counsellors in every school and sixth form college.
- Wants to create a careers structure for carers and offer free personal care with an investment of £20bn.
I am yet again left feeling a sense of disappointed after picking apart the green parties pledges around disability, as it appears that they are only willing to focus on mental health and a careers structure for carers.
I would have liked to have seen the green’s mention how they plan to improve the accessibility of our public transport and pavement network for those with mobility issues who use wheelchairs, mobility scooters and other walking aids.
We have been affectively forgotten by the Green Party.
What does Plaid Cymru say about Disability
- Wants to adopt the UN convention on the rights of disabled people into UK law as it protects the right to live independently and reform the mental health act.
I really don’t believe that Plaid Cymru cares about the disabled community who live both in Wales and the other devolved nations that make up The United Kingdom.
I would have liked to have read how they plan to improve our pavement and public transport networks for those who use wheelchairs, mobility scooters and other walking aids.
What does Reform UK say about Disability
- Want to change the benefits system within. 100 days as they believe that it is broken.
- Assessment”s for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and work capability would be face to face and include an independent medical assessment to prove eligibility for payments.
I am again disappointed that they only set out their plans for our benefits system and how they would reform the assessments for them.
I really wanted to read all about how they plan to improve our pavement and public transport networks for those who use wheelchairs, mobility scooters and other walking aids.
