GCSE Results do not define your future especially if you are not academic and live with a disability

I live with Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus which means that I use a wheelchair to navigate all parts of daily life after being born at 25 weeks weighing just half a bag of sugar.

12 years ago this week I received my GCSE results after putting 110% into my studies for the previous 2 years, however my results weren’t what those reading this may expect from someone who can talk for the nation.

My GCSE Results

  1. GCSE Maths – G
  2. GCSE Spanish – F
  3. GCSE ICT – F

As you can see from the above I didnt get your standard A*, A’s, B’s and C’s that the majority of my peer group were awarded.

My results did not define me as a individual because I knew that I wouldn’t be going to the likes of six form college in the September, a move to Coventry and a specialist further education college for those with disabilities was my next stop.

September 2012 saw me make the 75 mile journey from Herefordshire to Coventry where I would be study a BTEC qualification in sport amongst other things like functional skills English and Money Management.

When I left Hereward College in June 2014 I wheeled away with four qualifications and they are:

  1. BTEC Diploma in Sport, Level 2 – Merit
  2. Money Management, Level 1 – Pass
  3. Functional Skills English, Level 1 – Pass
  4. Sports Leader, Level 2 – Pass

My message to any one who doesn’t receive the results that they expected today is this, it isnt the end of the world there are other options like apprenticeships and internships that you can explore if university is not the route for you.

Apprenticeships are something that I believe in having completed a Business Administration one at level 2 with the communications team at Herefordshire Council from February 2020 to April 2021.

In 2016 I turned my hand to campaigning and managed to get the likes of Herefordshire Council to install more dropped curbs in the county and I have also got West Midlands Trains (WMT) to install accessible waiting areas at stations that are unstaffed and see high volumes of passenger assistance requests on the network that they manage.

Exam results and disabilities don’t define who you are!!!!!!!

I would like to take the time to recognise and thank my loyal readers and followers who continually take the time out of your busy schedules to read my latest posts, it doesn’t go unnoticed and is very much appreciated.
