In the next few hours the eyes of the world will be on the Avenue des Champs- Elyseees and the Place de la Concorde in Paris where the 2024 Paralympic Games will officially be opened.
When the games start every four years the general public refer to our community as being superheros or superhuman, terms that I personally hate because I am not a superhero or superhuman.
I am just me living my best life!!!!!!
Yes I have achieved some incredible things during my 28 years on planet earth and they include:
- Receiving GCSE results
- Carrying the Paralympic Flame as a 16 year on horseback in 2012
- Meeting Prime Minister David Cameron
- Moving away from home to attend college
- Winning numerous national and regional competitions in equestrian
- Chairing a national youth panel for Football vs Homophobia
- Interviewing ex England international David James
- Being recognised by England Football and McDonald’s for my work in youth leadership
- Lobbying Herefordshire Council to install more dropped curbs across the county on behalf of the disabled community in 2022.
- Meeting the Minister for Roads and Local Transport to discuss my successful pavement campaign in March 2023.
- Lobbying West Midlands Trains to install accessible waiting bays at some of the unstaffed stations on there network that see high volumes of passenger assistance requests going though them.
- Attending a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in May 2024.
Nothing that I have listed above is defined by my disabilities, it has all been possible because of my sheer determination to succeed.
The Paralympic movement was started by Sir Ludwig Guttman in Stoke Mandeville back in 1948 to help his paraplegic patients and all the world war 2 veterans rehabilitate quicker.
If I hear anyone calling our community either superheroes or superhuman during the next 12 days I won’t be afraid to call them out.
We are normal people, with only difference being that we have to find different ways of doing the same things as our able-bodied counterparts.
Was this post useful about why you shouldn’t be calling our community things like superheroes or superhuman?, if the answer is yes then why not subscribe and receive my posts direct to your inbox within minutes of publication.
