As you will know by now I visited the Topography of Terror in the German capital where I learnt all about how Hitler’s regime affected those who identified as being either disabled or homosexual.
A gentlemen who went by the name Albert Widmann was tasked with finding something that could kill multiple individual’s at once, Carbon Monoxide was chosen to carry out this awful act.
Shockingly he later organised the procurement of Carbon Monoxide gas from a company that was called I.G Farben. In the year 1940 a trial gassing took place which Albert Widmann is thought to have been involved with.
Born in 1912 to a father who was a train driver, Widmann studied at the technical university in Stuttgart and then went onto work at the institute of organic chemistry and pharmacy.
His crimes saw him handed a custodial sentence of 5 years by a court in Dusseldorf an appeal was lodged and his term was later reduced to 3 years, 6 months Imprisonment for aiding and abetting murder in the poisoned ammunition experiments.
He was also tried in relation to something that was called euthanasia murders which it was thought he had an involvement in and this happened in the year 1962 with him being sentenced in the September of 1967 to a total of 6 years and six months behind bars.
As some time had already been served both before and of course after the trial, the remaining time of his term behind bars was suspended in an exchange for a payment of £4,000 DM to a non for profit organisation that worked with the disabled.
When it comes to those that identified as being homosexual during this time they didn’t have it easy either, a persecution of homosexual men took place in Wihelmine, Germany, the Weimar republic would witness the start of societal tolerance towards these men in the metropolis of the city.
This is where widespread prejudice against them would persist to be sure that in the so called golden twenties they carved out the niches, where they were free to develop their very own subcultures.
I am glad that thousands of people who live around the world are now able to live within society in peace, however we still have along way to go in respect of this being the case across the world.
