Wheelchairs users who are Aston Villa supporters will be visited by the German Police going through airport security.

Aston Villa take on RB Leipzig on Tuesday the 10th of December, 2024 at the Red Bull Arena, I visited the German capital Berlin in late October and was both shocked and surprised by the Airport security procedures that I experienced as a wheelchair user.

If there are any Aston Villa disabled supporters travelling to the match who take cabin baggage with them which has there wheelchair charger within it will be checked by the airport police.

Those at security will open your baggage and remove the charger, it will then be taken away from the security area to be checked,

The airline that you are travelling with, the airport police and gate staff will also want to know what type of batteries your chair has and how many watts they are.

Airport police across Germany are required to see you in person if you are travelling in a power wheelchair to check if your chair has been tagged in the correct way by the airline.

My message to any disabled Aston Villa supporters who are travelling to the RB Leipzig match this week is this, I recommend that you arrive at the airport relatively early for your fight home and that your charger in an accessible place within any luggage.

It would also make it easier for you and the airport staff you if have all the information about your chair to hand once you have arrived at the airport.

If your control panel cannot be removed from your chair I would recommend applying some bubble wrap to it whilst it is in the hold, so that it cannot get damaged in transition.

The ground crew at the airports in Germany will also ask that your cushion is removed from your chair and taken onboard with you so it isn’t lost in transit.
