Sky blues supporters can now be treated as one when attending matches at the CBS Arena thanks to the accessible waiting spaces installed by West Midlands Trains

This weekend sees the start of Level Playing Fields, Unite for Access campaign for 2025 which runs until Sunday the 16th of March. As a disability activist and someone who has followed Coventry City football Club since living in the city whilst attending college way back in 2024 I wanted to give something back to the community.

All those who support the sky blues (Coventry City) will now be treated as one when attending matches at the CBS Arena by rail and that is thanks to West Midlands Trains installing accessible waiting spaces at Coventry Arena station.

Station staff, train crew and of course other passengers should be able to see the spaces from either end of the platforms along with the other types of signage that have also been installed by the operator.

In support of the spaces the operator has also installed a blue and white sign with a white wheelchair logo and words ” for mobility assistance please wait here” inside the sign which comes in the form of a square and has been attached to a lamppost of the platforms near to where the spaces are located.

I am delighted that the team at West Midlands Trains (WMT) recognised that there was a need for these spaces at the station as it can only hold a certain amount of supporters at any one time post match because of passenger safety etc.

In 2024 level playing fields annual survey of supporters who identify has having a disability found that 22% of those asked saw inaccessible public transport as a barrier to attending live sport, this was up by 2% on the previous year (2023).

LPF’s survey hasn’t been launched for 2025 at the time of writing this post, however when the results of it are revealed later this year I hope that those surveyed say there isn’t a barrier to them attending live sport using public transport anymore in the midlands.

If you travel by rail on a regular basis and require assistance to either board or disembark services there are 3 different ways that your assisted travel can be booked and they are:

By Phone: 0800 024 8998 or by using Next Generation Text – 18001 0800 024 8998.

Online: https://booking.passengerassistance.com.

By using the app: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/passenger-assistance/id1542190496.

I would like to remind all supporters of Coventry City and of course any visiting fans to be respectful of the spaces and why they are there, so on that note please be mindful of where you are standing on the platforms following matches or events at the arena.
