I am glad that the personal independence payment points system will change when it comes to daily living activities.

Work and Pensions secretary, Liz Kendall has announced that the government intend to save upwards of 5 billion pounds through a welfare benefit reform by saying:

  1. Claimants will need to score 4 points in one section of the daily living element to qualify for personal independence payment.

2. There will be no freeze on personal Independence payment or means test for the benefit.

3. A review of the personal Independence payment assessment will also take place.

I have been a claimant of personal independence payment and before that disability living allowance for as long as I can physically remember, It wasn’t just a choice that I made yesterday to claim these benefits it something I have done for most of my life.

As you will know after reading the piece I wrote on this very subject just yesterday I rely on these payments to fund mobility aids like my wheelchair which allows me to get and about and have some level of independence.

When the news was first reported by the times newspaper last week, I was left wondering if I would be one of those to be penalised through these reforms because I have a disability and have worked since the age of 18 when I was legally able to do so.

But now I know that not a lot is going to change for those of us who have claimed these benefits for most of our lives, which is much better news than was first feared.

My clear but simple message to both the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer and his Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Liz Kendall is this, why did you leave people like myself hanging for 5 days causing so much distress and anger within our community, The way this has been handled by you is disgusting and I urge you look at ways to not repeat this type of situation ever again.

There have been times during the last few days when I have wanted to cry because I did not know how this reform was going to effect me going forward. The Conservative and Unionist party attempted something similar a number of years ago but they were forced to do a u turn following backlash from the Labour Party.

As I said yesterday (Monday March, 17th 2025), the disabled community now need to stick together on this and fight it, I urge you to write to your local member of parliament and share your story with them.

I shared how these reforms could impact my life with Jesse Norman the Member of Parliament for Hereford and South Herefordshire who represents me in parliament and has done so since he was first elected back in 2010.
