Herefordshire Council ensure that Westfailing Street is completely accessible to all.

The local authority in Herefordshire has this morning (Wednesday, 2nd of April 2025) finished dropping the final two kerbs on Westfailing Street in Hereford which I have spent much of the last 4 or so years campaigning for.

As you may remember the council carried out works on Barrie Road in the city last year that saw a total of 8 curbs dropped and some existing ones resurfaced. Due to funding constraints the final pavement on the road wasn’t able to be completed at the time.

Both sides of the street (Westfailing) are now accessible to all, meaning that mobility scooter and wheelchair users can use either side of the pavement network when attempting to complete there journey’s independently in the area.

My readers and social media followers who have followed my campaign in recent years may also remember that the first phase of the campaign which focused on Plough Lane and Harrow Road featured on ITV News Central in 2022.

This forced the local authority to act on my concerns and lower the curbs on those two roads because they were seen as an accident waiting to happen, following the completion of these works I began lobbying the council to fix the roads that I mentioned at the start of this blog.

I repeatedly asked the same question in various different ways at public council meetings, and was ignored by councillors and their officers. The chief executive officer of Herefordshire Council, Paul Walker reached out and promised to monitor the situation until it had been resolved.

My message to him, his officers and the teams at Balfour Beatty Living Places (BBLP), who have carried out these works is a clear but simple one and this is, I cannot thank you, your officers and the teams at BBLP who have been involved in making this happen enough as it now means that the disabled community living in the county will be safe whilst out and about on the pavement network.
