The Mayfair in Hereford should be moved to a location outside of the city centre streets, this will ensure that the city centre remains accessible to All

The Mayfair has visited Hereford each year for decades and is the responsibility of the parish council in Hereford.

The fair returns to the city next week and will run from Tuesday the 6th to Thursday the 8th of May 2025.

Rides and stalls will span across much of the city centre and surrounding streets.

As a disability activist and wheelchair user living in the city I hate Mayfair week and don’t visit the centre on the days that it is in residence.

Since 2020 I have called for the parish council to consider moving the event to a bigger location on the outskirts of the city.

There are a couple of viable options and they are the Bishops Meadow which runs along the River Wye or Hereford Racecourse.

Those reading this who are from our beautiful county will probably be screaming as there phone, laptop or tablet right now because they know it’s a long standing tradition to host the fair in the city.

A bigger picture has emerged in recent years around how inaccessible Hereford becomes for those who use wheelchairs, mobility scooters and other walking aids during the first week of May.

My clear but simple message to councillor Kevin Tillett and the city council is this, “Having the fair in the city centre isn’t a viable option anymore”.

“You are making the accessibility of Hereford very difficult for anyone who uses a mobility aid and this is why I am once urging you to consider moving the fair to elsewhere in the city”.

“ I would love to visit Hereford during fair week but it’s to difficult to do so because of how the fair is layout out across the city centre and surrounding streets”.

“ It’s time for change, let’s move it too a location where it can be enjoyed by all of Hereford’s wonderful residents and not just some of them”.

“ Be rest assured that I will be banging this drum until something changes”.

Change isn’t something to be scared of!!!!!
