A few months ago Liz Kendall the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions announced benefit reforms into personal Independence Payment (PIP).
It is being reported in The Times newspaper that a quarter of those with Cerebral Palsy who claim the benefit are set to lose out as part of the reforms.
As someone who lives with the condition I rely on the benefit to live as independently as possible, I fear that will change following the announcement by the Department for Work and Pensions.
My previous message to the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, Liz Kendall and their government remains and is this, the announcement and this entire process has caused untold upset in recent months for myself and my friends due to the uncertainty around the changes.
Earlier this year I wrote to the Member of Parliament for Hereford and South Herefordshire, Jesse Norman in which I shared how the cuts would affect me.
In that letter I recalled that “ My wheelchair is partly funded by the NHS with the rest being covered by myself using my PIP payments, without these funds it would be virtually impossible to live as independently as I currently do”
“ Being born at 25 weeks weighing just half a bag of sugar was the card that life has dealt me and I have made the best of the situation using PIP. I remarked that the government talk about wanting to get those with disabilities who can work back into it”.
“ They seem to have forgotten those of us with disabilities who have been employed since the age of 18, the big question is why are we the ones who are being penalised by the reform because of our friends who could work but currently do not”.
“ My mental health has suffered in the last few months because of the fact that this topic has consistently been on the news agenda, I wish they had kept there gobs shut until it has been decided who will be affected”.
“ Our community shouldn’t need to share our stories with those who are there to represent us in parliament to get what we are entitled to so that we can live our best life” .
“ We (the disabled community) don’t claim personal independence payment for the fun of it, we require the funds to live, thank you for making a very poor decision labour. it has been noted and is very much unappreciated”.
