Its time to ensure that I and many others who are vulnerable are looked after as a Heat health alert is issued for large parts of England

A yellow heat health alert has been issued for large parts of England and comes into affected at lunchtime on Wednesday (18th of June, 2025) and will remain in place until 6pm on Sunday (22nd of June, 2025).

Areas covered by the alert are: The East and West Midlands along with London, the South East, East of England, Yorkshire and Humber.

As someone who lives with a disability and is classed as vulnerable along with thousands of others I urge all others living within our society to check in on those who might need a little extra support during the alert period.

The UK Heath Security Agency (UKHSA) who are the body responsible for issuing such alerts recommend that the following steps are taken to protect those who are most at risk.

  1. Where possible shade or cover windows.
  2. Open windows ( when it is safe to do so), once the air feels cooler outside, an example of this would be at nighttime – try to also get some air flowing through your home.
  3. Use electric fans, if the air temperature is below 35 degrees, but do not aim the fan directly at your body as this can lead to dehydration.
  4. Check that the heating is turned off.
  5. Reduce heat generation, where possible by: Turning off lights and Electrical Equipment when they aren’t being used.
  6. Consider cooking at cooler times of the day.
  7. Move to a cooler part of the house, especially for sleeping.
  8. It may be somewhat cooler outside in shaded areas or within public building like supermarkets, libraries, or places of worship so consider a visit to any of these places as a way of cooling down. Please only attempt this if you are able to do so safely without putting others at risk say the UKHSA.

My message to all communities across the Midlands is a clear but simple one and this is, “It is time to come together as a community and support those around you to stay safe over the next couple of days”.

” if you have a vulnerable relative or neighbour near you, please, please, please check in on them at regular intervals from 12pm tomorrow (Wednesday) until as I have already mentioned 6pm this Sunday”.

” Our communities are awesome at doing this which has been proven on several occasions during cold weather incidents in recent years”.

“I know that if we (the disabled community) could we would return the favour in your time of need”
