Sir Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister has been forced to do another u-turn on legislation that he and his government tried to bring in, this time it was the cuts to the disability benefit, Personal Independence Payment.
Under the plans that were announced by the Work and Pensions secretary, Liz Kendall who is also the Member of Parliament for Leicester West earlier this years would have seen thousands of disabled people set to lose the benefits that we rely on to live independently.
When the plans were first announced in the House of Commons I wrote to my MP, Jesse Norman to share with him how I would have been affected by the proposed cuts to the benefits system.
I shared with him that “My wheelchair is partly funded by the NHS with the rest being covered by myself using my PIP payments, without these funds it would be virtually impossible to live as independently as I currently do”
” We don’t claim personal independence payment for the fun of it, we require the funds to live”.
After what has been a very difficult week, this is some much welcomed news and I hope that the thousands of current claimants also take some comfort from the u-turn.
My massage to Sir Keir, Liz Kendall and there government is a clear but simple one and this is, I am glad that you have done a u-turn on this piece of legislation however it shouldn’t have taken over 100 of your own MP’s to sign an amendment to make this happen, Nevertheless this very welcome news.
“It is time that you learned from this experience and don’t repeat it again during your time in office”
Our community with the support of MP’s has come together and shown the government that we will not be messed around with over issues like these. I would like to thank the media for allowing me time to share my story with there listeners, it is very much appreciated and hasn’t gone unnoticed.
