As someone who has been affected by a potentially unsafe drain cover on the pavement network in Hereford, local authorities need to be reminded of there responsibilities around the removal and return of drain covers when they are situated on the pavement network.
If you read the blog that I posted yesterday (Sunday, the 29th of June 2025) you will know that last Wednesday my wheelchair Aston was condemned as a direct result of a crack in his frame.
This morning I have written to the Minister for the Future of Roads at the Department for Transport, Lillian Greenwood who is also the Member of Parliament for Nottingham South.
In the letter I urged the Minister and her departmental officials to remind local authorities in England of their responsibilities when it comes to the removal and return of drain covers when they can be found on the pavement.
I ended by asking for confirmation from the department with regards to if any guidance has been issued to local authorities in relation to this already.
The message that I have for Minister Greenwood and of course her officials is this, I am sure that you would not want a similar situation happening to a constituent, family member or friend so please act now and stop things like this from happening again in the future.
Our pavements in the United Kingdom are in a state of disrepair and this has to change today and not in 5 or 10 years time, I am getting fed up now of having to repeat myself on this very point.
My message to other wheelchair users is a simple one and is this, please, please, please be careful when it comes to travelling over drain covers as I found out last week something as simple as hitting one has the potential to cause irreparable damage to your wheelchair or mobility scooter.
The upset and distress following incidents like this, isn’t worth it!!!!

It is only right that I end by thanking all those who have been involved in ensuring that I have been able to remain on the road since Wednesday, your work to make this happen is very, very, very, very much appreciated and definitely hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Calling you all legends is an understatement right now, you are most definitely heroes in my eyes!!!!!
All that is left for me to do is thank each and everyone of you, my loyal readers and of course social media followers for continually taking the time out of your busy schedules to read my latest post in some cases within minutes of publication. It does not go unnoticed as always and is of course very much appreciated.
