If I did not have a statement whilst in the early years of education things would have been 10 times harder to navigate

As someone who lives with Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus after being born at 25 weeks weighing just half a bag of sugar in the August of 1996, a statement ensured that my early years in education were easy as they possibly could be.

Statements are now known as EHCP’s (Education, Health and Care Plans) and bring professionals together like Physios, Occupational Therapists and anyone from other agencies if they are involved in your life whilst in education.

Over the weekend the secretary of state for education would not be drawn on whether she plans to change the eligibility criteria in the same away that the Department for Work and Pensions are proposing for Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment.

If I didnt have a statement whilst at mainstream primary and secondary school I would not have received the level of support that I did, it would have been a case of fighting for it at every turn.

Thousands of children, young people and there families will end up fighting for the support they need because they won’t have access to a EHCP, answer me this – how this that right it shouldn’t be a disability lottery when it comes to the support required.

My message to the Prime Minister, the Secretary of State for Education and there government is a clear but simple one and this is, Thousands of people like myself had statements growing up due to the nature of our disabilities, what is different in 2025?.

Children, young people and of course there families rely on the support of EHCP’s so why are you even considering the possibility of removing this vital support for them, its not right and shouldn’t be allowed to happen.

Stop the disability lottery now, our lives are not there to be played with like you have done for the last few months. I stand with all those who could be affected by these proposed changes and will do so for as long as it takes.
