Hydrocephalus makes me live life to the full on the 29th anniversary of my first brain surgery.

Today (Saturday October the 18th, 2025) marks the 29th anniversary of my first brain surgery at the children’s hospital in Birmingham.

Having hydrocephalus, water on the brain makes me want to life to the full, the condition is not life limiting but can be fatal if something was to wrong for those with the condition who have Shunt.

Those within our society don’t know a great deal about the condition unless they are directly affected by it due to living with it themselves or knowing someone who has it.

Many of you reading this from across the world will be wondering how I manage to live my best life with Hydrocephulas and here is how, I try to put everything that I have into advocating for others within our society who aren’t always able to speak up and be heard.

As I do at this time every year I would like to take the opportunity to remind all members of society, what they symptoms are of a shunt malfunction:

  • Decreased alertness or unusual drowsiness
  • Vomiting
  • Changes in vision, such as blurred or double vision
  • Swelling or redness along the shunt pathway
  • Headaches that are persistent or worsening
  • Sudden changes to personality or behaviour, this can include irritability or mood swings.
  • Difficulty with balance or coordination

Seek medical help immediately if you see anyone exhibiting the above symptoms so that they can receive the help they require quickly. The symptoms highlighted above in bold are the ones that I have had during a crisis.

The NHS (National Health Service) and Department for Heath and Social Care (DHSC) needs to do more to raise vital awareness of the condition so that the United Kingdom population has it in their mind whilst out and about.

On Tuesday, the 14th of October, 2025 I wrote to the Department for Heath and Social Care where I urged them to consider the development of a national campaign around Hydrocephulas focusing particularly on the symptoms of it and how those living with it can be affected.

It’s time that we started to raise of the condition today and not in 5 or 10 years time, when it suits!!!!
