Disabled football supporters shouldn’t be treated differently when it comes to the purchase of match tickets because of the club you support, a change in the law is needed around this now and not in the next 5 or 10 years when it suits.
Those reading this will know by now that I recently contacted Aston Villa to get a refund for the match tickets that I purchased in early September for the club’s UEFA Europa League clash with BSC Young Boys that is due to be played in Birmingham on November the 27th, 2025.
As you will also know by now the ticketing team at the club responded to my enquiry by saying that they are unable to offer a refund on home tickets for the 2025/26 season under there terms and conditions.
I replied by saying that I would like the tickets to go to another wheelchair user who both wanted to and could attend the match, however the club said that there is no resale option available for UEFA Europa League matches.
On October the 24th, 2025 I wrote to Stephanie Peacock MP, who is the Minister responsible for Sport, Tourism, Civil Society and Youth about this issue, I explained that there needs to be a change in the law to reflect the need for every disabled football supporter to be treated the same regardless of who they support.
This relates to the sale of match tickets and the fact that Aston Villa don’t offer a refund or resale option in situations like these, however Arsenal offer a ticket exchange/ transfer option for there disabled season ticket holders or members who are unable to attend matches.
In recent years villa have held a waiting list of supporters who are interested in attending certain matches should tickets become available, this option no longer exists meaning that the wheelchair bay I purchased will remain empty for the match in question.
Because of this ridiculous policy I will be set to lose around £102 after the same thing happened following the league match with Burnley on Sunday, October the 5th 2025.
It should be noted that if I was to wheel into a retail outlet or entertainment establishment where I purchased a faulty product or received a service that was well below par of what I paid then I would be entitled to get a refund, how this any different because we are talking about a football club who are in my view are offering me a service.
Change around this is needed now, so that no one experiences this type of situation again.
