The special assistance for those with mobility issues and other disabilities was eye watering to watch earlier this evening as I arrived in the Swedish capital, Stockholm.
After touching down on Swedish soil following my fight with British airways, I experienced some fun which isn’t uncommon for me when travelling aboard.
Being the last board the aircraft in London was also a difficult experience because people were once again looking at me whilst I was being moved through the aircraft to my seat.
Normally those with assistance needs are boarded first because it is both easier for the staff and more dignified for us as passengers.
I was assisted off the airplane by assistance staff using an aisle chair which is used to move those with limited mobility to and of course from there seat on board as I have already stated.
However I wasn’t secured to the chair with seatbelts before being moved from the plane, this is something that always happens at airports in the United Kingdom.
Once off the plane I transferred into a manual airport wheelchair and taken to the baggage reclaim hall to collect my wheelchair.
Apparently my chair was too heavy for the assistance team to bring it from the aircraft’s hold to the door the plane.
My chair weighs 95kg and that’s why I believe was too heavy for them to move it, however in baggage reclaim after a lengthy delay I was reunited with my legs.
Three people then had to lift my chair from a trolley that had been used to move it around back on to the terminal floor, this was something I watched with my hand just over my face.
It is however important to note how helpful the lady was who assisted me from the air bridge to baggage reclaim, she was so lovely and a credit to the airport.
