Sometimes I don’t feel safe when travelling by train as a wheelchair user

In recent years there have been occasions where I haven’t felt very safe when travelling by rail as someone who uses a wheelchair to navigate daily life.

Those reading this may remember that in the summer of 2022 whilst returning from Birmingham to Hereford after a day out at the Commonwealth Games I was verbally abused on board a train by a fellow passenger.

On that occasion I was unable to move away from the gentleman who was subjecting me to the most horrific abuse because I required the use of a ramp to leave the train.

More needs to be done by those who manage the railways to ensure that those rail passengers who are classed as vulnerable are kept safe whilst using the railways, hence why I have just written to the Minister for Rail & HS2 at the Department for Transport.

I have asked the Minister what plans are in place to keep the most vulnerable safe on the railways should we need to move away from any situation that maybe unfolding onboard a train.
