People living with disabilities and other mobility issues (Including myself) should take care if out and about in the county on foot or wheels this morning as the pavements won’t be gritted.
At the time of writing this snow is falling in Kington, Bromyard and Ross on Wye with Hereford unfortunately missing out on a dumping of the white stuff.
There is also a yellow weather warning for ice that has been issued by the Met Office and is set to be in effect from now until 11am this morning (Wednesday November the 19th,2025)
Earlier this week the UK Health Security Agency issued a cold health alert for large parts of the country, check out my tips around how to keep vulnerable residents and neighbours warm during the cold weather:
Don’t have them sitting still for more than an hour or so.
If they are someone who finds it difficult to move around, stretching their arms or legs from a sitting position (if they are able to) can also help to keep them warm.
Ask them if they would like some hot food, and drink or a blanket as those with circulation problems find it incredibly hard to keep warm at any time of the year but especially in the winter months (November, December, January & February)
I still believe that the highways team at Herefordshire Council should consider gritting the pavement network to keep our most vulnerable safe when it’s icy.
My message to the local authority is a clear one and this, please consider changing your winter operations plan to reflect the real need to keep all communities safe at these times.
