Those of you reading this will know by now that I have been living with Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus for the last 29 years and am ready to be forgotten about in the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s 2025 autumn budget this week.
The spring statement this year saw our community fearing that we were going to face even more devastation, following on from when Liz Kendall the Leicester West MP and then Secretary of State for Work and Pensions thought it was a good idea to spent weeks scaring the living daylights out of us in relation to personal independence payment cuts.
I for one have never forgiven her and the current labour government for this and I don’t think that I ever will. At this point I would like to say this to Rachel Reeves ahead of Wednesday’s big announcement in the House of Commons:
I along with thousands of others within the disabled community aren’t just pieces on a chess board that are there to be messed with by you, The Prime Minister and your government, we shouldn’t be used to save money so that it can be redistributed to other departments.
However, more funding is needed within the NHS (National Health Service) so that it can continue treating those including myself who have long term health conditions or disabilities as and when required.
Heidi Alexander and the Department for Transport also needs to be funded so that we can remain as independent possible by being able to travel by trains and buses when we want to and not when we are told.
In the next few years all rail operators will be under GBR (Great British Railway) with some fantastic working being done by West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway to improve the accessiblity of the network that they manage for those with disabilities and other mobility issues.
Once the operator is under public ownership from the 1st of February 2026 I urge you to give it all the funds required to continued this much needed project as it has been somewhat costly since it began in the early part of 2024.
Finally the Member of Parliament for Wolverhampton South East, Pat Mcfadden and the Department for Work and Pensions needs support to help those who can work from our community either into or back into the work as soon as possible.
Organisations should be given money to improve the support that they give to those with long term disabilities and health conditions so that they can remain with the company and not be at risk of having there contract of employment terminated through no fault of there own.
Since the age of 18 when I was physically able to do so I began looking for work and have been in employment ever since in one form or another, I have enjoyed every job that I have had. However since 2015 I have had my contract of employment terminated by a local hospice here in Herefordshire and the National Health Service because of circumstances beyond my control.
This has to stop today and not in the next 5 or 10 years when it suits key decision makers, being employed gives you both a sense of pride and greatly improves your mental health, why can’t all disabled people have that experience if they are able to.
