A number of railway stations across the Midlands have seen accessibility tools installed on the platforms to support those with disabilities or mobility issues to travel by rail.
The team at West Midlands Railway have been delivering the project since I met with them to discuss the accessibility of the stations they manage across the network in November 2023 for those with mobility issues or disabilities.
It was at this meeting with officials from the operator at Witton Lane station near Birmingham where I suggested they consider trialling waiting spaces and signage on the platforms at stations that are close to event arena’s or see high volumes of assistance requests at the stations.
I wanted to show those in attendance from the operator the challenges that I and others faced when using Witton station after matches at Villa Park to get home.
Work started in January 2024 to install blue and white boxes which feature a white wheelchair logo and the words ” for mobility assistance, please wait here alongside signage positioned near to where the spaces are located on the platforms, mirroring the same messaging.
Those reading this will know by now that the railway stations with these tools are: Aston, Witton Lane, The Hawthorns, Coventry Arena, Kenilworth, Lye, Worcester Foregate Street, Worcester Shrub Hill, Selly Oak, Telford Central, Shenstone, Blake Street, Gravelly Hill, Erdington, Chester Road, Lichfield City, Wylde Green, Four Oaks and Sutton Coldfield.
In the last 24 hours I have written to the Member’s of Parliament of where the railway stations are located in a bid to promote the spaces and signage.
