I shouldn’t be subjected to hurtful words and gestures as someone living with Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus in 2025.
Incidents in recent months have reminded me that more needs to be done when it comes to educating children, young people and some adults about the issue.
Recently some young people decided that it was acceptable to make gestures in my direction when I could not see what they were doing.
My clear but simple message to children and young people is this, it is 100% not okay to make fun of someone because of their gender, age, race or disability I urge you to think before you speak and remember this ” if you haven’t got anything nice to say don’t say anything at all”
Adults who look after children and young people should consider having a discussion with those in there care about what is and is not acceptable to say to another person, I for one don’t even want an apology from any individual who delivers the vile hate , all I want is for them to learn from there actions and take responsibility for them
These individuals will not win as we (the disabled) community are stronger than they might think!!!!!
Official figures for the year ending, March 2025 show that there has been an 8% decrease in disability related hate crimes being reported to the police from the previous year (2024).
