I have spent years thinking that I am taking to long when crossing roads in my wheelchair on England’s road network

In recent years I have spent a lot of time thinking that I am taking too long when crossing roads on England’s road network, as a wheelchair user who lives with Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus.

However I was wrong, it is not the fact that I am taking to long when crossing, the real issue is that the pedestrian crossings are set to give us not enough time to cross the road safely and return to the pavement network.

This is putting both me and all other members of our (the disabled) community at risk across the nation (England) as we try to carry out an everyday task like crossing the road.

Road crossings are the responsibility of local authorities to maintain along with the road and pavement network’s within there counties and not that of Highways England, the Department for Transport or the government.

I am pleased that I now no longer have to think that it is my fault ” cars have to wait longer to move off from traffic lights once they have changed from red to green.

Highways authorities across England need to do more so that the public are safe when crossing the road at designated points, especially those who identify as having a disability or mobility issue, I am at risk if I haven’t had adequate time to safely cross the road at designated crossing points before the lights change.

Hear more from me on the ITV regional news programmes mentioned below in the next couple of weeks when I share how this issue really affects me and others on England’s road network.

Don’t forget to look out for the blogs I will be posting on my social media on the day that the piece is aired on ITV Central, Merdian, Anglia, Westcountry, Yorkshire and Tyne Tees.

It’s only right that I take this opportunity to thank the highways authority where I live who in recent years have gone above and beyond to support those from our community to stay safe when out and about on the pavement network’s.

Now is the time that you stand up and show our communities that you really can listen and act upon the concerns of local residents, especially those with disabilities or mobility issues.

A thank you must go to you, my regular loyal readers and social media followers who continually take the time out of your busy schedules to read my latest posts, it doesn’t go unnoticed and is of course very much appreciated.
