Local authorities do not give those with disabilities or mobility issues enough time to safely cross at pedestrian crossings

Pedestrian crossings are the responsibility of local authorities to maintain along with the road and pavement network’s in there county, those with mobility issues and other disabilities aren’t however given enough time to safely cross at designated points.

Wheelchair and mobility scooter users are given on average just over 5 seconds to safely cross a road before the lights change from red to green and motorists begin moving in their vehicles.

It’s only on A roads into big cities where the traffic allow for extra time so that those from the disabled community who have mobility issues have a enough to cross the road at a crossing and return to the pavement network before the lights change.

Recently I wrote to the Minister for the future of roads at the Department for Transport, Lillian Greenwood MP where I urged her to remind all highways authorities across England of there responsibilities in relation to keeping all pedestrians safe when crossing roads at designated points, especially those with mobility issues or disabilities.

However I am aware that the Department for Transport along with the government don’t have any say in how local road and pavement networks are maintained by authorities who manage them.

The data that I gathered from a short piece of research which I conducted prior to filming with ITV News recently is shocking but not in the slightest surprising sadly, here are my findings:

One crossing allowed me to safely cross in 11.94 seconds with another allowing me just over 13 seconds to do so, here are the results in full:

Crossing 1: 0.09 seconds

Crossing 2: 07.72 seconds

Crossing 3: 00:11.94 seconds

Crossing 4: 00:13.14 seconds

Crossing 5: 12.97 seconds

Crossing 6: 05.93 seconds

Crossing 7: 06.58 seconds

The figures in bold are timings taken at pedestrian crossings that are longer due to the size of the road, at these I did have adequate time to cross safely.
