I hadn’t even finished crossing the road before the lights went from green to red, that made me feel really unsafe because I didn’t know if the motorists were going to move off.

Pedestrian crossing’s across England only give those with disabilities or mobility issues a matter of seconds to safely cross the road before motorists begin moving off in their vehicles.

Recently I filmed with ITV News for a piece looking at the issue of ” how long those with disabilities or mobility issues are given to safely cross the road at designated crossing’s in England.

Local authorities across the nation who are responsible for maintaining roads, pavements and crossing points in there counties don’t take into consideration that we as a (disabled) community may need some extra to safely cross the road before the traffic lights change from red to green.

During filming with ITV News I remarked that ” I hadn’t even finished crossing the road before the lights went from red to green, that made me feel really unsafe because I did’nt know if the motorists were going to move off”.

Later in the interview I added that ” so recently I looked at this issue and found that I was given just over 5 seconds to cross one pedestrian crossing, but then when I went to another one I was given around 7 seconds and that isn’t enough time”.

” it’s scary motorists need to realise that we need that bit of extra time to cross because if we aren’t given that time and the lights do change we are put at risk and it could be dangerous”.

My message to all motorists across the nation is a clear one and is this, if you see someone with disabilities or mobility issues at a pedestrian crossing, please give us a few extra seconds to finish crossing the road, before moving off in your vehicle once the traffic lights have changed from red to green.

As someone who uses a wheelchair to navigate daily life I struggle with crossing the road at times because I do not have a enough time to safely cross the road meaning that half of the time my wheels are still on the road network when the traffic lights change from red to green.

I should feel an element of safety when crossing the road at designated crossing points in my wheelchair and not a sense of dread, like I currently do.
