To say I’m gutted is an understatement “ now Ledbury railway station, won’t be getting accessibility improvements anytime soon”

To say I am gutted in an understatement “ now Ledbury railway station won’t be accessibility improvements anytime soon.

As someone living with Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus, I use a wheelchair to navigate everyday life, however that won’t be going to the likes of the market town, Ledbury by rail.

For all of my life the inaccessibility of the railway station in Ledbury, Herefordshire has been an issue for our (the disabled) community.

I last travelled to the market town (Ledbury) by rail some years ago for a job interview at a local GP practice.

That in itself proved problematic because I was forced to rely on the support of the signaller at Ledbury to help me across the tracks at the end of the platforms so that I could safely exit the station.

The Department for Transport (DFT) are basically saying to the disabled community that “ we can’t travel to the railway station in Ledbury with ease or confidence anytime in the near future which is disgusting in my view as a wheelchair user.

When the Labour Party came into power in the July of 2024 they spoke a lot about “ putting passengers first” however they clearly don’t care about our community in Herefordshire after this decision was made.

My message to the Prime Minister, Transport Secretary and the rail minister is a clear one and this is, we the disabled community need railway stations across the United Kingdom to be accessible regardless of where we live.

Why are you taking our choice of visiting railway stations away from us by not making the necessary improvements to the stations which will make them accessible to all.

Please act now and not in the next 5 or 10 years when it suits so that we as a disabled community in Herefordshire, can have our independence back and travel by train when we want to.

Ledbury is a town in Herefordshire that I would love to visit, however this isn’t currently possible because of the bridge over to the second platform not being accessible to myself as a wheelchair user.

As always I would like to thank the incredible team at West Midlands Railway for their hard work and dedication in ensuring that a number of railway stations they manage in the region are accessible to all.

It doesn’t go unnoticed and is as always very much appreciated.
