Travelling by rail as a wheelchair user to Aston Villa’s Europa League clash with a RB Salzburg at Villa Park reminded me why I travel that way to matches

Tonight I travelled to Aston Villa’s Europa League clash with RB Salzburg at Villa Park in Birmingham by rail for the first time since last September.

Those reading this may remember that I had a challenging experience at Witton Lane railway station which is a 5 to 10 minute walk or wheel away from Villa Park last year.

Having attended England’s FIFA World Cup qualifier with Andorra at the stadium (Villa Park), I was on the receiving end of an experience which saw me nearly sat on by a fellow supporter whilst waiting to enter the station after the match.

However this evening was a completely different experience because there was no queue to join at the entrance to the station after the match, meaning I was able to head straight onto the platforms.

The accessible waiting space was empty meaning that I could have parked in it if needed whilst waiting for my train back into the city centre of Birmingham.

However there was no need for me to use the waiting space as I headed straight onto the train as it was already at the station.

Once back at New Street station in Birmingham city centre I was assisted off the train by the senior conductor from West Midlands Railway (WMR) because Network Rail’s passenger assistance team had finished for the day.

My message to supporters who used the rail network when travelling to and from the stadium tonight is this, “ thank you for allowing me to safely board the train with ease at the station, it’s really appreciated and wasn’t unnoticed,

“ I didn’t know what to expect when using the station this evening especially after the match, so I’m grateful to you all for making it an easy and enjoyable experience”.

It is only right that I thank the team from WMR (West Midlands Railway) who were on site at Witton tonight for ensuring that I was able to safely board a train back into the city centre (Birmingham) at the station after the match, your support hasn’t gone unnoticed and is of course very much appreciated.

Other supporters on the platform were equally incredible, as they always are in moving down to the next door of the train allowing me board the train quickly once the senior conductor had secured the ramp to the floor of the train, this support wasn’t unnoticed and is very much appreciated.

Finally, thank you to each and everyone of you my regular loyal readers and social media followers who of course continually take the time out of your busy schedules to read my latest posts it does not go unnoticed and is very much appreciated.
