The railway station in Ledbury, Herefordshire which is managed by West Midlands Railway should get some funding to have a accessible waiting space and the same signage installed on the accessible platform at the station, now the operator is publicly funded.
In the last 2 years the operator has installed the waiting spaces and signage at a number of railway stations across the network they are responsible for and those are: Aston, Witton Lane, Coventry Arena, The Hawthorns, Kenilworth, Lye, Worcester Foregate Street, Worcester Shrub Hill, Telford Central, Selly Oak, Shenstone, Blake Street, Gravelly Hill, Erdington, Chester Road, Wylde Green, Four Oaks, Lichfield City, Sutton Coldfield and Tile Hill.
A few weeks ago the Department for Transport cancelled the previously promised ” Access for All” funding for Ledbury station, which is only accessible to those with disabilities or mobility issues from the west-bound platform.
Our (the disabled) community are forced to travel up the railway to Colwall which only has a single platform and change trains there so that they can return to Ledbury in the direction of Hereford on the westbound platform.
As I said in a previous post on this subject from January the 21st this year, if Dunblane station in Scotland can become step free after years I see no reason why Ledbury can’t follow it’s lead!. Another station that has step free access which I used on regular basis between 2012 and 2014 is Tile Hill station near Coventry.
The station has a ramp behind the stairwell to the footbridge, connecting the platforms, so passengers with disabilities or mobility issues can exit the station ease from the other platform – this could have been an option for Ledbury if the promised funding had not been cancelled by the DFT.
If the DFT (Department for Transport) won’t reverse their decision to cancel the previously promised ” Access for All” funding then they should seriously consider giving the operator some funding to install an accessible waiting space at the station.
In the last few minutes I have once again written to the Minister for Rail and HS2 at the Department for Transport, Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill CBE where I have urged him to consider giving the operator (West Midlands Railway) some funding for the installation of a waiting space on the accessible platform at Ledbury.
