A few years ago, I stepped down as the chair of the football versus homophobia youth panel a role that I had held for just over a year at that point.
In the months after being appointed into the role, I was given the opportunity to meet with Sam Timms, the chair and founder of Villa and proud.
The group supports Aston Villa’s LGBTQIA+ fan base to feel included whilst attending matches at Villa Park and everything within the club.
As the chair of the youth panel at football versus homophobia, I wanted to build a relationship with the supporters group focusing on this valued community at the football club I support.
Meeting Sam gave me the opportunity to find out more about the work of the supporters group, which is something I have continued to follow since stepping down from my role with the youth panel.
My message to all Aston Villa supporters in attendance at tonight’s Premier League match with Brighton at Villa Park is this, it is time that we all get behind the clubs LGBT supporters group this evening as we dedicate the match to the Premier League’s with Pride initiative.
However, we shouldn’t just support them this evening at the dedicated match. It should be something that we do week in and week out when supporting the boys in Claret and Blue.
I for one am proud to be an ally of the group and will continue to be one for the rest of my life.
Sam/Villa and Proud my message to you is this, the work that you have done for Aston Villa’s LGBTQIA+ supporters over the years has been phenomenal, you should be so proud of the work you have done to ensure that all supporters can be heard, I for one am so grateful to you for taking the time out of you busy schedules to meet with during my time as the youth panel chair at Football vs Homophobia.
Before the match kicked off at 7:30, I released a post talking about why I believe we should all be allies of this community and remember that they could also come from other minority groups within society.
