As a disabled rail passenger who has a ” Disabled Person’s Railcard” I am delighted that more of my friends will be eligible for these cards when travelling around the nation by rail.
Having had a Disabled Person’s Railcard for a number of years now I can say that this card has been a lifeline for me as someone who uses a wheelchair when navigating daily life.
This will mean that those of my friends who have hidden disabilities will be able to purchase a railcard for disabled people from later this week, following changes made to the eligibility criteria by the Rail Delivery Group (RDG).
Those who are Blue Badge Holders, Disabled Person Bus Pass Holders along with those who are unable to drive on medical grounds are now eligible for the railcard from this Sunday, 28th of February 2026.
Disabled people from across the nation will be able to travel by rail at a discounted rate of a 1/3 off train tickets with the railcard, those with one from the Midlands will be to travel to various railway stations in the region that have had accessibility improvements on the platforms in recent years.
The railway stations managed by the now publicly funded rail operator, West Midlands Railway or London Northwestern Railway with the accessibility improvements are: Aston, Witton Lane, The Hawthorns,, Coventry Arena, Kenilworth, Lye, Worcester Foregate Street, Worcester Shrub Hill, Telford Central, Selly Oak, Shenstone, Blake Street, Erdington, Gravelly Hill, Wylde Green, Sutton Coldfield, Four Oaks, Lichfield City, Chester Road and Tile Hill.
It is fair to say that having a Disabled Person’s Railcard has quite frankly changed my life because of how much I have been able to save on train tickets when using my railcard.
Train travel is a lifeline for thousands of disabled people from across the United Kingdom and I see this as an important step forward to achieving a more accessible Britain for all.
