Potholes and roads in poor condition across the Midlands can have a detrimental impact on those who use wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
Those of you reading this, maybe wondering why I am commenting on a topic that only motorists need to be interested in, however that is not the case.
As a wheelchair user whilst out and about in the community, I have to be cautious when crossing the road just in case there are potholes or bad road conditions that I move over in order to cross the road.
My wheelchair is at risk of taking a massive impact if I am too hit a pothole or a piece of road that is in poor condition.
Unfortunately, it is not just those using vehicles that can become victims of poor road conditions or after hitting a pothole.
I do feel the full force of potholes and poor road conditions at times when crossing the roads and moving over a pothole in order to get to the other side of the road.
Last year my wheelchair was condemned after I hit a drain cover on the pavement network, leaving me with a temporary set of wheels that caused me a lot of pain for a number of weeks.
My message to the local authorities in the Midlands is clear and is this, please, please, please put more funding into the repair and maintenance of our road networks.
It is not just vehicle users that are affected by potholes and poor road conditions, wheelchair and mobility scooter users can also be affected by these issues.
Please work with us, the disabled community to ensure that we are also listened to when you are making vital repairs to the road network.
My wheelchair is my lifeline. and always will be, so please don’t make me lose it, because it needs repaired thanks to potholes or poor road conditions.
