As an Aston Villa supporter who uses a wheelchair to navigate everyday life I have always seen Villa Park as accessible when visiting the stadium on matchdays.
Those reading this may know that I have supported the claret and blue side (Aston Villa) since 2010.
In recent years travelling to and from the stadium in Birmingham has not been plain sailing for me. However that issue was overcome in 2023 when I had a light bulb moment whilst stood on the platforms at Witton Lane railway station.
Blue and white boxes that feature a white wheel logo and the words “ for mobility assistance, please wait here” could solve the issue for our community so I suggested it to the rail operator.
However, that is not all, entering the stadium has always been an easy experience because of how accessible the entrances are at both sides of the stadium.
The toilets are also pretty big within the stadium meaning that I am able to completely access them independently whenever I choose to do so which gives me some of my independence back.
Queueing at the food and beverage outlets within the stadium can be a challenge because of how busy they get both before the match and at halftime meaning I have to rely on the support of my personal assistant to access this.
Exiting the stadium at full time is not a challenging experience because the stewards block all of the stairwells feeding into the wheelchair section of the stadium meaning that we are able to leave with ease without running into any other supporters.
