Please don’t remove my rucksack from the back of my wheelchair without asking first.

In the last few hours, I travelled to Sainsbury’s on my wheels to get some shopping.

Once I have paid for said shopping and popped it away in my rucksack , I began as I always do by putting the bag back on the back of my wheelchair.

However, on this occasion there was a couple paying for their own shopping behind me who were watching me complete the process of returning my bag to the back of my wheelchair where I got it from in the first place.

They (the couple) for some unknown reason then decided that they would remove the rucksack from the back of my wheelchair when I was halfway through returning it.

The gentleman then proceeded to hand me my rucksack and it was only thanks to the intervention of a Sainsbury’s staff member who said “ I think he was putting it on the back of his chair” that they realised what they had done.

It was then thanks to the staff member that my bag was once again returned to the back of my wheelchair as she offered to put it back on so that I didn’t have to repeat the process once again within minutes.

There is one issue that I have with this whole situation and that is this, the gentleman failed to ask if I required any help when I was putting my bag on the back of my wheelchair before he removed it.

If he had asked the question “ do I require any help?” , then I would have politely said no I’m okay thank you as I always do.

My message to the general public about the issue of helping those with disabilities or mobility issues with things like putting bags on the back of mobility aids is this, please do the courtesy of asking us if we require any help because sometimes we will and sometimes we will not.

I have been left feeling a sense of anger because today my independence was taken away from me as I have put my rucksack on the back of my wheelchair hundreds of times in various different locations around the county that I live in.

It’s simple, just ask first !!!!!!!

Is this only right that I take this opportunity to thank all members of our society who do take the time to ask the question if they see that I could be struggling. The fact you ask the question is appreciated and does not go unnoticed.

A thank must also go to you, my loyal readers and social media followers who continually take the time out of your busy schedules to read my latest posts, again it doesn’t go unnoticed and is very much appreciated.
