Ministers and departmental officials at the Department for Transport are currently carrying out a review into Mobility devices that are used on the road and pavement networks across England.
As someone who uses a powered wheelchair when navigating everyday life I have written to Simon Lightwood MP who is the Minister of State for Roads at the department (for transport) about this very issue.
I used my own lived experience to talk about the time when I was nearly hit by a mobility scooter in a pedestrianised area where I live because it was being driven way to fast, this is why the speed limits for scooters and wheelchairs should remain in the updated legislation once the consultation has been completed.
Powered wheelchairs should not be referred to as vehicles in the updated legislation on this issue because many wheelchair users only venture onto the road network when it is absolutely necessary to do so because of pavement parking or a lack of dropped curbs in the area.
At this point it is important to state that I welcome this consultation being conducted because the current legislation on the issue is somewhat outdated and needs to be updated so that it reflects the ever-changing world that we, those with disabilities or mobility issues live in.
The highways team at the local authority where I live should be taking part in the consultation so that the views of the disabled community living across the county can be noted.
