This morning (Monday 18th of May), whilst out and about in my wheelchair I accidentally hit a parked car on the pavement, if that was not enough I was then forced to move a wheelie bin with the front of my wheelchair in order to continue my journey on the pavement network.
After navigating past the parked car and wheelie bin, those within the neighbouring property came outside and said that they would move the vehicle, at that point it was too lat as I had already got past it.
However this is not the worst incident of this type which I have faced in recent weeks, just last week again whilst out and about on the pavements in my home town I came across a parked van on the pavement with a gentlemen stood working at it.
When I approached the van I politely asked the gentlemen if he was able to sightly pull it (the van) forward so that I could safely continue with my journey, however his response to that polite request shocked and angered me.
He replied to my polite request by refusing to pull the van forward because it would have involved him having to take off the harness that he was wearing to move the van.
He expected me to risk my own safety in order to move around his van by going into the road network with the potential for vehicles to be coming in both directions of travel, whilst I was moving around the van.
My big question is why didn’t he just spend an extra couple of minutes removing his harness and moving the van so that I could have remained on the pavement, there was no need to put me in an unsafe position.
