In the last hour or so I attempted to venture out for my daily walk on the streets of my home town, Hereford in my wheelchair.
Once I had reached a certain section of the pavement network I was faced with temporary traffic lights and pavements being blocked off on both the right and left hand sides of the pavement on the opposite side of road to where I was.
If I had crossed the road I would not have been able to turn either way and continue with my journey due to obstacles in either direction, meaning my only option would have been to venture in to the road network and put my safety at risk.
Putting my safety at risk was not something I was prepared to do so decided that I would turn around and head back in the same direction I had come from in the first place and then go for a shorter walk.
Other pedestrians are able to get around obstacles like these because they are able to quickly get on and off the pavement within a matter of seconds where I can’t.
My message to Candent the company carrying out these works is a clear but simple one and is this, “Please consider the disabled community especially those in wheelchairs, mobility scooters or who have visual impairments who would not be able to safely navigating around any obstructions on the pavement network in a safe manner”.
” This is not the first time that I have had to consider whether or not to venture into the road network in order to get around your works, using the pavement network is necessity and not a luxury for wheelchair users like myself”
” All I ask is that you do better next time and don’t effectively cut off one of the most vulnerable groups within our society”.
