People don’t really understand the hard work that has gone into the accessible waiting spaces project across the railways in the Midlands and beyond.

The general public do not understand the hard work which has gone into making the accessible waiting spaces project being delivered across the Midlands rail network a success.

Those of you reading this will know that I have been working with the team at West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern railway for the last three years to make the railway stations they manage accessible to all.

Earlier today I was on a train from Hereford to Birmingham New Street and was telling a fellow passenger about the work . I’ve been doing with the operator for nearly 3 years.

When the train arrived at Worcester Foregate Street railway station, I showed the passenger one of the waiting spaces out of the train window.

This then led to the passenger to tell me that the spaces should be yellow both on the platform floor and up the adjacent wall behind the spaces, instead of blue.

She went on to say that there should be minimal writing on the signage and spaces, at this point I didn’t know how to react or what to say in response.

As you can imagine, I have put a lot of time and effort into this project and enjoy working with the team from the operator to make this incredible change for those with disabilities or mobility issues who travel by rail.

I don’t need someone’s negativity about a project they know nothing about.

Rail passengers across the Midlands are benefiting from the spaces and that has been evident through them posting on social media sites like TikTok.

Over the last seven days, I’ve spent a lot of time talking to the media about the project and what the spaces are designed to do on the platforms of some railway stations managed to by the operator.

All I ask is that those rail passengers who may need assistance to travel by rail, remember these words “ for mobility assistance, please wait here”

Do you travel by rail on a regular basis and require assistance to board or disembark trains?, Your assisted travel can be booked up to 2 hours before departure in any of the following ways.

By Phone: 0800 024 8998 or by using Next Generation Text – 18001 0800 024 8998.
