I am proud to have Cerebral Palsy and this month I am planning on celebrating that at every opportunity I get as it is a massive part of who I am. July is disability pride month which gives our community chance to raise awareness of the beautiful conditions that we live with on a daily basis.
Those of you reading this who have followed my blog or me on social media will know that I live with two conditions (Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus), which means that I use a wheelchair to navigate everyday life after being born at 25 weeks.
In recent years activism as become my passion and I have spent the last 3 years working with the incredible accessibility team at West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern railway to improve the accessibility of the stations they manage for passengers with mobility issues or disabilities.
This work is far from done with a number of railway stations seeing the waiting spaces installed on the platforms since the last edition of disability pride month in 2025 which has of course been incredible to see.
Since July 2025 railway stations in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Redditch and Birmingham have seen the introduction of the waiting spaces on the platforms.
When I first suggested to the operator in November 2023 that they should consider introducing waiting spaces at some of the railway stations they manage that are unstaffed or have high volumes of passengers requiring some assistance to board trains, I did not for one second think that we would end up with over 30 stations having the new tools on the platforms.
However it is what it is and my simple idea is making a massive impact on our community being able to travel by rail with ease around the West Midlands and down towards the capital (London).
Having cerebral palsy has never stopped me from succeeding in all aspects of my life and that is something that will not be changing moving forward.
