Last month I wrote to Stephanie Peacock MP, who is the Minister for Sport, Tourism, Civil Society and Youth at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport about the challenges I was facing when trying to get a refund for T20 Cricket World Cup tickets I had purchased.
As a wheelchair user I rely on the support of personal assistants to attend live sport events at big venues across the country and was unable to attend two the matches I had tickets for during the T20 Women’s Cricket World Cup because there was nobody available to attend with me.
This morning (Friday, July the 10th 2026) I have received a response to my concerns from the Minister, which says ” The Government is fully committed to ensuring that major sporting events are inclusive and accessible to everyone. We firmly believe that barriers should be removed, not added for fans wishing to support live sport”.
While DCMS does not have direct oversight over individual ticket insurance polices which are commercial agreements between consumers, insurers, and event partners, we take feedback regarding accessibility at major tournaments very seriously”.
” We have made the tournament organisers aware of how these polices impact wheelchair users in practice. To support you, we have actively raised your specific case with the England and Wales Cricket Board to see if there is any flexibility or discretionary support they can offer you directly regarding Mr Wood’s tickets for this summer’s tournament”.
” Event specific accessibility protocols are operational decisions by the event organisers. However, for additional assistance, it may be helpful to contact the charity Level Playing Field which offers a range of support and advice around disabled spectators access.
The Minister concluded by saying, ” furthermore, we will continue to work closely with National Governing Bodies, sports grounds, and organisations to enhance accessibility across the sector.
To say that I am delighted by the response that I have received in relation to this issue is an understatement and I cannot thank the Minister and her departmental officials enough for there support with this, following there response I have now contacted the ECB for further assistance about this issue.
