Recently when I was returning home to Hereford from Birmingham by rail following the T20 Women’s Cricket World Cup opener between hosts England and Sri Lanka at Edgbaston I had my assistance cancelled just 20 minutes away from home.
Saturday June the 13th 2026 saw me receive a text message from the staff at Hereford railway station to check if I was onboard the train because my assistance had been cancelled on the passenger assistance app.
On arrival at the station I asked the member of staff who got me off the train what had happened along with the senior conductor from WMR (West Midlands Railway), before once again contacting the accessibility team at the operator about the incident.
It appears that the assistance team at New Street had cancelled my booked assistance because they had not seen me before travelling, however the Assisted Travel Lounge did not open until after my train had departed the station.
Once again I have a clear message for the assistance team and it is this, if you don’t see me and I have booked assistance please don’t cancel it as I may have chosen to self board with the support of the senior conductor from the operator for various reasons.
I will be continuing to self board trains at the station until I have assurances that things are or have improved, it is really time that you started to do better Birmingham New Street.

It is only right that I take this opportunity to thank the senior conductors at WMR who go above and beyond to ensure that I am able to board there services with ease across the network they manage, but especially at New Street.
