The Department for Transport should call on the assisted travel team at Birmingham New Street to do better as soon as possible so things aren’t allowed to worsen any further for passengers using the service.

A few days ago I wrote to the Minister for Rail and HS2 at the Department for Transport about the worsening situation surrounding the assisted travel service at New Street station in Birmingham.

Those of you reading this will know by now that I have been using the service for a number of years as a wheelchair user living with Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus.

In recent months what I have been experiencing whilst using the service falls well below the standards that should be shown by the team in the second city.

I have grave concerns that the service delivered will only deteriorate in the next six or weeks or so while the government respond to my concerns.

My message to the Secretary of State for Transport and her Minister for Rail and HS2 is a simple but clear one and is this, please respond to the concerns that I outlined in the letter dated, 20th of July 2026.

Currently the service is unacceptable and this most definitely should not be the case in 2026, I urge you to act quickly so that things aren’t allowed to worsen any further.

Hopefully this will be the only time that I as a disabled rail passenger have to write to you about this issue which has been going on for a long time now.

West Midlands Railway deserve both some credit and praise for the way that they have handled my concerns about this in recent weeks and months.

Please do the right thing and just put rail passengers first by holding Birmingham New Street to account on this issue.

It is only right that I take the opportunity to personally thank the incredible team at West Midlands Railway who have gone above and beyond in recent weeks, months and years to ensure that I am able to travel around on the railways in the region with ease, it does not go unnoticed and is very much appreciated.
