Political decisions are made from a building located opposite Hollyrood Palace on behalf of the nations residents by the First Minister and his government. The parliament north of England’s boarder has existed since 1707 when the then known kingdom of Scotland merged with the kingdom of England to officially form the kingdom of Great Britain.
As a result of the kingdom of Great Britain being formed the parliament of Scotland was closed to create the parliament of Great Britain in Westminster, London.
A referendum was held in 1997 where the people of Scotland were asked to vote if they wanted a parliament to govern the nation once again following its closure in the 1700’s. An act created in 1998 known as the ” Scotland Act 1998″ ensured that the current parliament could be established.
In May 1999 the first meeting of the newly created Scottish parliament took place with it being officially opened by the late Queen Elizabeth II on July the 1st that year.
General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland was the normal meeting place for the Parliament until a new building for it could be created, when creating the new home an international design and build competition was held so that the new building could be created in the nations capital city, Edinburgh.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the new building in the year 2004 which had a number of principles including sharing the power and equal opportunities.
Queensberry House, a large townhouse that was built in the 17th century and is thought to be the oldest part of the Scottish Parliament, the site became a military hospital and barracks.
At the end of the 17th century a house which was known as the house of refuge or the poor house was included and incorporated into the new design of the parliament.
The location has since become home to the office of the Presiding Officer who holds the same role as the Speaker of the House in Westminster.
